Latitude: Lines dividing the Earth horizontally
Lines of latitude are imaginary circles parallel to the equator, dividing the Earth into different latitudes. The equator, the 0-degree latitude line, divides the Earth into two hemispheres: the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Other latitudes are numbered from 0 degrees to 90 degrees north and south of the equator. 90 degrees North is the North Pole and 90 degrees South is the South Pole.

Longitude: Lines dividing the Earth vertically
Lines of longitude are imaginary lines connecting the North and South Poles of the Earth. The prime meridian, also known as the 0-degree longitude line, passes through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. Other longitudes are numbered from 0 degrees to 180 degrees east and west of the prime meridian. The 180-degree longitude line is the International Date Line.
Role of Longitude: Longitude helps determine the geographical location of a point on Earth in the East-West direction. Together with latitude, longitude forms a coordinate system that helps determine the exact location of any point on Earth.
