Introduction: What is Geography?
Geography is the science that studies the Earth, including the location, characteristics, and formation processes of natural and human phenomena on the Earth’s surface. From majestic mountain ranges to vast oceans, from arid deserts to lush rainforests, geography helps us better understand the planet we inhabit.
Geographic Coordinate System: Latitude and Longitude
To determine the exact location of a point on Earth, we use a geographic coordinate system based on lines of latitude and longitude. Latitude are imaginary circles parallel to the equator, running east-west. Longitude are imaginary circles connecting the North and South Poles, running north-south. The intersection of latitude and longitude allows us to determine the geographic coordinates of any location in the world.
Important Latitudes:
- Equator (0°): divides the Earth into two hemispheres, North and South.
- Arctic Circle (66.5°N) and Antarctic Circle (66.5°S): mark the boundaries of the polar regions.
- North Pole (90°N) and South Pole (90°S): are the northernmost and southernmost points of the Earth.
Important Longitude:
The Prime Meridian (0°) passes through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, and is used as a reference point for calculating longitude.

Topography:
Topography includes various landforms such as mountains, hills, plateaus, plains, valleys, etc. They greatly influence the climate, living environment, and economic activities of humans.
Climate:
Climate is the average weather state over a long period in a specific area. Temperature, rainfall, and humidity are the main factors affecting climate. Climate directly affects the distribution of organisms and human activities.
Hydrology:
Hydrology studies water on Earth, including rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans. Water resources are valuable assets that need to be protected and used rationally.
Soil:
Soil is the thin layer of material on the Earth’s surface that provides nutrients for plants. Soil quality affects agricultural productivity and socio-economic development.
Applications of Geography
Geography has wide-ranging applications in many fields, from urban planning and natural resource management to weather forecasting and climate change research. Understanding geography helps us make better decisions in protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development.
