The World of Poetry: Exploring the Beauty of Language

From Origins to Development

Poetry, an ancient art form, has accompanied humanity through generations. From folk songs passed down orally to modern, philosophically rich poems, poetry always holds a special place in the cultural and spiritual life of humankind. The birth of poetry is linked to the need to express human emotions and thoughts about life, love, nature, etc. Throughout history, poetry has realistically reflected social changes, historical ups and downs, and the characteristic cultural values of each nation.

Vietnamese poetry, with its rich history and cultural traditions, possesses a vast treasure trove of works. From classical Đường luật poems to modern free verse, Vietnamese poetry demonstrates diversity in style, language, and themes. We can see the development of poetry through historical periods, from medieval poetry with illustrious names like Nguyễn Trãi and Nguyễn Du, to modern poetry with prominent figures such as Hồ Chí Minh, Xuân Diệu, and Tố Hữu…

Types of Poetry

Đường Luật Poetry:

Đường luật poetry, with its strict structure and rigid rules, demands skillful technique from the creator. However, this very rigor creates a unique beauty, sophistication, and harmony in every line and word.

Free Verse:

Free verse, in contrast to Đường luật, has a more flexible structure, offering more freedom in the use of rhyme, rhythm, number of lines, and number of characters. Free verse is often modern, reflecting the diversity in emotions and expression of the creator.

Other Forms:

Besides these two main types, there are many other forms of poetry such as lục bát poetry, song thất lục bát poetry, haiku (Japanese poetry), etc. Each type of poetry has its own characteristics, offering different aesthetic experiences to the reader.

The Value of Poetry

Poetry is not just an entertaining art form but also carries great value. Poetry helps people express emotions and thoughts, share life experiences, and awaken love and empathy between people. Poetry also contributes to preserving and promoting traditional cultural values and educating love for one’s homeland and country.

In conclusion, poetry is an indispensable part of humanity’s cultural life. Studying and appreciating poetry will help us understand more about life, people, and the world around us.
